The Greatest of All-Time

Best running back ever...Yes!

Watching the Superbowl I am reminded of the greatest running back in the history of the NFL....Emmitt Smith! I get tired of people dissing on Emmitt. He is the greatest running back in the history of the NFL no question about it. How can you say that? I can say that because of his stats, longevity, durability, championships, and character. What I don't get is that I have yet to run into a football fan who agrees with this fact. They typically say that Barry Sanders was better (even though his stats pale in comparison). They say that Walter Payton was better (he wasn't as durable or productive as Emmitt). Then you have the real crazies who say that Eric Dickerson, Tony Dorsett, Earl Campbell, and Jim Brown area better. Yet there is nothing but "opinion" to back up these claims. What I don't get is how you cannot say that Emmitt is (was) the best running back ever. Granted he just ran North and South which some might say is boring, but in my book it says effective. You can see that Barry isn't even in the same league as Walter and Emmitt...don't believe me? Check for yourself!
So you don't think Emmitt is the best...why? And don't say because you liked Barry's highlights on Sports Center - that won't cut it!

Jason, you know the Cowboys weren't actually in the Super Bowl XXXIX, right?

just because emmitt was always hopped up on drugs so the IDIOT played with a freakin seperated shoulder where he couldn't feel anything and was oblivious to the world around him, plus he played 5 years past his prime, as you see here. http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/1094

he shoulda quit after the 2000 season, where his yrds per carry was more like eddie george. i bet if eddie played for 9 more years then he'd be the best ever. AND LUCKy for you, he's a cowboy now. emmitt was...excuse me, IS one of those guys that never goes away. WE'RE STILL WAITING, FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD. LEAVE!!!

PLUS emmitt played behind an offensive line that regularly sent 3 to 4 guys to the pro bowl. now look at barry sanders in detroit..can you name a lineman from detroit? didn't think so, CHUMP. barry is the best, EVER.

As annoying as "The Jerm's" comments are he is right in saying that Smith had the most incredible O-line in the history of football. That is undiputed. It was often said of the holes that Smith ran threw, "I can run through that hole and gain five or ten yards." That O-line was amazing. Smith didn't have to do anything but run north and south because there wasn't anyone in his path. As for Sanders, he had to develop a running style that incorporated sharp cuts, etc because his O-line was ridiculously bad. Yes, Sanders was/is the best ever.

On another note, it must have crushed you to hear Troy Boy say that the Pats dynasty means more than the Cowboys of the early '90s. Ouch!

There is nothing to debate. BARRY SANDERS is the greatest back of all time. Smith didn't earn the rushing record, it was a gift, a gift from barry sanders. He let Smith have the record. Sanders played for the love of the game and when the love left, he left. Smith only played for Money$$$$ and money alone. Why did he leave the cowboys, the team he spent his entire career with? Because the cowboys would pay out for an old, brokendown running back.

I tend to pitch my tent in the Sanders camp as well, however the notion that ANY professional athelete only plays for the love of the game and not the MONEY$$$ is pure ridiculous insanity. They all play for the money.

Chris, name for me one player who has played any professional sport for free! That's why they are called "professionals." If worship ministers can get paid...shouldn't atheletes have that same right? By the way would love to see a blog on THAT topic. Sports are measured by stats, wins and losses, and how you play the game. Emmitt is NUMBER 1 (most championships, most touchdowns, most yards, longest carreer, most games played, etc.) in all those areas...have some integrity people.

And JCH...it didn't break my heart to hear Troy say that New England was better than Dallas was during their four year championship run. You know why...because Troy is a sellout! You didn't hear Jimmy, Michael, or Emmitt say that. The truth is New England would have gotten creamed by a Dallas team of the 90's. Check for yourself.

Ok well maybe sometimes i don't think through my responses, but i still stand by Barry Sanders because just because your're the oldest running back ever doesn't make you the best. (Then again he's only 35, can you imagine retiring at 35? Just think in another 5 years you can hang them up and retire)

speaking of money. somebody needs to pay up if they want to experience the best concert ever :). I'd sure hate to mail this ticket to JCH :)

best is such a vague term jason...lets get specific. most talented? do doubt, barry sanders. best career? ok i'd say emmitt.

The Jerm nails it again (and wasn't even annoying this time). Best career? Okay, Smith, maybe but can still be argued. Best talent? No doubt, Sanders, hands down. What do you have to say about that self-proclaimed J-Wild?

Ewing, send the U2 ticket to my home address, thanks.

Most accomplished, effective, and prolific back in NFL history - Emmitt Smith
Most talented - not Emmitt, but not necesarrily Barry either! Barry is definately top five (which Emmitt is not).

I would rank running backs based on talent in the following order:
5. Earl Campbell & Roger Craig
4. Jim Brown
3. OJ Simpson
2. Barry Sanders
1. Bo Jackson

Bo Jackson was great, no doubt, but you really consider him the MOST talented running back in NFL history? Really?

One has to consider Jason's blind allegiance to the Cowboy franchise concerning this matter. He has no perspective. This is the guy who rooted against the Eagles because of how the Eagles' fans responded to Irvin getting hurt. Talk about carrying grudges. Jason, forgive and forget brother, it's biblical.

But back to the running back scenario. There is no way Bo Jackson is #1 on the most talented list and E Campbell shouldn't make the top 5 either. So Bo could play baseball and was a great athlete. That doesn't make him the most talented. He couldn't do half of what Barry did on the field. And E Campbell? That dude just ran over people. He and Bettis are of the same mold. Is that talent? If it is, Bettis belongs up there as well as The Moose. (Shoot, I'm surprised you aren't pitching him as the best ever!)

Again, because of your unabashed fawning of the Cowboys, you seem to forget that E Smith was surrounded by super-star talent. The Cowboys had it all: an incredible passing game that opened up the running game, the best O-line ever and a fullback who didn't mind doing anything but block. Sanders? He had nothin'.

But I don't expect you to get it. All you see are Stars.

Greatest Running Back In NFL History.... Who could dance

1. Ickey Woods

You can't argue with that. I love how many qualifications J-Wild needs to defend Smith's status. Guys like Payton or Sanders don't so many qualifiers.
They are quite simply...The Greatest
