Dr. Pepper

I just don't get it! Why the devotion? I mean I know that some of you, just by looking at that image to the left, have started salivating like a pavlovian dog (that's right Joe using my degree). I love soda, and I prefer Coca-Cola over all other varieties, but seriously I don't get what's so great about Dr. Pepper.

I understand how people who only drink diet soda's are fanatics because they believe they are getting some sort of nutritional benefit from drinking the unleaded soda instead of the high octane regular soda. But the devotion to DP is a little mystifying to me. There is something a little...off about Dr. Pepper people. Most restaurants here in the city do not serve Dr. Pepper (they also don't give free refills, split checks, or accommodate large parties, but that's a different post). Besides the restaurants Dr. Pepper is relatively scarce in the grocery stores and corner bodega's. The other day I had to go to three different stores to find regular Dr. Pepper for a friend. I have heard so many, mainly transplanted southerner's, lament these facts. I even bet there are some people out there who wouldn't even move to New York just because DP is hard to come by. This devotion is amazing to me. Apparently there are people who even COOK with Dr. Pepper?

The one benefit of this devotion is that if you do happen to know of a DP addict, all you have to do to appease him or her is show up with a two liter of DP and it's all good. So is it the fact the Dr. Pepper is a "born in Texas drink" and therefore compels a Texas sized devotion? Or is it really that good?

I'm the guy who requested that Jason fetch me a Dr. Pepper. I'm sorry, Jason, that it was so difficult. Next time I'm stuck in the hospital for three days straight, I'll request something that's convenient for you. (How's that for a guilt trip?)

To understand my like of Dr. Pepper you need to know Dr. Pepper's story. It is after all, the oldest soft drink in the good 'ol USofA. It was originally made and sold at a drug store in Waco, TX. It was introduced to the nation in 1904 at the World's Fair in St. Louis and was an instant success.

Really devoted Dr. Pepper Drinkers can tell you what makes the Dr. Pepper in Dublin, Texas the best. Anyone?

Jason, just be glad I didn't ask for Dublin Dr. Pepper!

"I'M A PEPPER!"

I like it because it's taste is unique. It's somewhere between a cola, root beer, birch beer and cherry cola... but does not qualify as any of those. It's unique.

My own son doesn't understand the greatness of Dr. Pepper? Where did I go wrong? Sure, you're a great husband and father and a dedicated Christian man who does an incredible job at every task you take on...but Coke? My passion for Dr. Pepper has nothing to do with Texas or the South. If so, I would never drink it again. (Sorry all you Rebs)I never drank soft drinks (soda, pop, Coke)until going to ACU and JP Isbell started sharing his DP with me. It was all over...I was hooked. I am currently two weeks dry and sober (no soft drinks) but I see a Dr. Pepper lurking around every corner. Jason...Dr. Pepper is a thousand times better than Coke, so snap out of it. P.S> I love you Brandon.
Mom from Seattle where they used to not have DP but have come into the 21st century and now have it everywhere, unlike NYC.

I must admit I have been somewhat of a flip-flopper on this issue, being as I have lived in Texas for 23 of my 25 years...I don't know if it is peer pressure or what, but there have been times when nothing sounded sweeter (because I don't think anything has more sugar in it) than a Dublin Dr Pepper...however...it never lasts very long, and I always return to my true love...COCA COLA...so I think I would make it okay in a Dr Pepper free zone...but no free refills? I don't know about that

To answer Joe's queery: DP's from Dublin are made with pure cane sugar and not that after-taste corn syrup.

When I found out that DP's were made from pulms, I was dishearted. My lack of devotion was tested. Even though I'm not a big drinker of DP's or really any caffinated drink (because of inner ear problems) I'd take a Dublin DP in a glass bottom any day of the week.

I hope you're not one of those Pepsi panzys Jason.

I grew up in Stephenville, Texas which is 10 miles away from Dublin - to which Joe referred. I grew up on the pure cane sugar DPs. I even had the privilege of drinking DP out of the old glass bottles from a machine stocked everyday at the Texas A&M Research and Extension Center in Stephenville. Although, I'm more of a Coca Cola man myself, I can appreciate the quality of DP (especially Dublin DP). I remember a friend from ACU giving me all the money in his wallet (about $30) to get as much DP from Stephenville as possible when he heard I was going home for the weekend. It used to be that the Dublin plant could only distribute within a 20 mile radius.

I am definately a Coca-Cola man. Pepsi is cheap and nasty.

Joe - My Bible tells me that if you ask for a Dublin Dr. Pepper, then I should get you a case, not just one. So please ask my friend.

Mom - You prove my point. I love how you rarely comment on anything I write, but if I bring up DP there are two comments! I love you :)

Our move to Thailand has gone pretty well, EXCEPT for the fact that Dr. Pepper costs $1.25 per can! Ouch! On a recent trip down to Singapore I smuggled back 8 cans (for about $.50 each). Drinking a can here is a religious experience for me. Is this idolatry?

I'll see your Dublin Dr. Pepper and raise you a Louisville Ale-8-One, which my Kentucky-dwelling roommate totally got me hooked on. It's the best regional beverage ever. We would bring its gingery goodness back to HU by the carload.

Dr. Pepper is not my cuppa. But Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper is the vilest, most artificial sounding thing I've ever heard of, so I at least give them their props for excelling in that contest...

Would you hurry up and write a new blog because I keep lusting and thirsting and needing that DR. PEPPER on the screen!
