It's Friday

I have read several articles criticizing Bush for going to the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. The Chancellor of Germany and the British Prime Minister are boycotting the opening ceremonies because of China's human rights record.

I believe Bush is correct to go to the opening ceremonies. China, like it or not, is going to be one of the most important nations in the world in the next century. Engaging China is the best way to bring about reforms and change.

Of course China has us in a little bit of bind. All they would have to do to show their 'displeasure' at Bush boycotting the games, is unload a few hundred billion dollars worth of treasury bills. We definitely don't want that to happen. So have a good time Mr. President and please no dancing!

I have a lock-in tonight at the church. Pray for me!

I have heard over the years how awesome the band Radiohead was supposed to be. I haven't bought into the hype. That is until I downloaded "In Rainbows" the pay what you want album they released. I can't stop listening to it. I feel like each time I listen to it I discover something new. I liked it so much I was going to get the Radiohead greatest hits that just came out, until I read some of the message boards about it on iTunes. It currently only has like two stars because Radiohead fans have bombarded the site with negative reviews. A vast majority of the reviews have said that a Radiohead greatest hits is sacrilege to the art they attempt to make with their music. Their fans advocate that Radiohead is best understood by looking at an entire album, not just a single. Their genius is only to be fully appreciated within the context of the whole album.

After repeated hearings of "In Rainbows" I can completely see how this is the case. So, you Radiohead fans out there, which album should be the next purchase for me. Here's their discography:

Pablo Honey (1993)
The Bends (1995)
OK Computer (1997)
Kid A (2000)
Amnesiac (2001)
Hail to the Thief (2003)
In Rainbows (2007)

OK Computer is one of the best albums I've ever heard. Just my two cents. Glad you're enjoying In Rainbows.

Ooh, JI, now you're speaking my language. I'm actually in the city to see Radiohead next Saturday. It's not about the hype; it's about the music.

So I'm gonna say that just because you're digging the new one doesn't necessarily mean that you'll immediately be on board with the whole catalog. "Accessible" is a word I've seen over and over in reviews for In Rainbows.

So here's the deal: OK Computer is supposed to be the one that defined them as doing something important. So that's one of those "100 albums you must own" sort of things. But the album that originally got me wanting to hear more of them is Kid A, and I think it might still be my favorite. MUST be heard as an album and not as a set of greatest hits.

I'd say those two albums together would be a great start to see what you think. Over their 15 some years they've done some obvious evolving. But hey, I'd love to hear what you think. I've been wondering what someone hearing them for the first time with In Rainbows would think about going to their back catalog for the first time.
