Ok...I Admit It!

Let's get real! We all have artists, movies, personalities, or celebrities that we would be embarrassed to admit we like. I don't know why, but I am going to reveal some of the people, movies, and personalities that I have or currently do like. This post is inspired by Joe Hays' post on being discovered reading chick-lit on the subway. So here goes...

Kelly Clarkson: I tried so hard not to buy that song "Breakaway" but I just couldn't resist, it's just too catchy a song. She was HORRIBLE as the last act on the VMA's this year, but her video and song "Since You've Been Gone" are almost impossible to not sing along with. I think she's good.
Richard Marx: One of my youth group kids has one only one song that he rates as a 5 star song in his iTunes library. It's "Right Here Waiting For You" and I couldn't agree with his assessment more. I cannot count the number of times I would listen to the Delilah love song and dedication radio show in Seattle and hear great Richard Marx songs. I love his song writing and he is a fantastic singer. Richard Marx rocks!
Justin Timberlake: The white Usher, only not as good, but more than adequate.
Breathe: This goes way back. Remember "Raise Your Hands to Heaven" or "How Can I Fall" or "Don't Tell Me Lies" in the late 80's? I listened to their album All that Jazz a thousand times. I wore out the tape! I can't count the number of 7th and 8th grade girlfriends that I dedicated RYHTH to. There is very little information about them out there now.

Oprah: If you have TiVO or DVR record Oprah and watch her during Prime Time hours. It changes the whole feel of the show. Her latest crusade against child molesters and predators has been amazing. People, she is good...her shows can be totally fluff and ridiculous one day, and devastatingly powerful the next. That's talent.
Rush Limbaugh: I used to enjoy Rush, and thought he was a fairly good pundit. But his lack of integrity has just become too glaring over the last several years. If a Democrat did HALF as much as Bush has done (financially alone) Rush would be skewering him every day. We will see if the same thing happens to the likes of Al Franken once the Democrats are back in power.
Tom Cruise: I will go see a movie just because he is in it, I think he is that good (I haven't seen "Eyes Wide Shut" or "Magnolia"). I know he is crazy and his life coaching skills are patheticly twisted. And he ditched Nicole Kidman and is now with someone younger than my sister...but I dig his acting life (how's that for integrity).
N*Sync: Like NKOTB, but only better. Great songs and fantastic arrangements!

Danny White: My favorite Dallas Cowboy for purely sentimental reasons. I can remember watching the TV with my dad and listening to the play by play on the radio as Danny tried to lead America's Team.
Martina McBride: The person I am least apologetic about on my list. She has one of the BEST voices in music, and has some of the greatest songs. She could sing Faith Hill into a hole!
TBN: The channel is like a car wreck, I just can't turn away. I watch TBN with my jaw wide open witnessing the...spectacle of it all. It's good entertainment, I am just sad that so many take it as good Theology.
Michael Jackson - Thriller Years: I actually sat my family down (circa 1985) lip-synced and danced to "Billie Jean" wearing my parachute pants, homemade rhinestone glove, and black shoes. How they kept a straight face, I'll never know. I listened to that tape probably a billion times. Tragic talent.

The Neverending Story: What an awful movie...but I loved it. I totally idolized Atreyu and thought he was so brave. Surprisingly enough the director, Wolfgang Petersen, also directed "Outbreak", "Air Force One", "The Perfect Storm", and "Troy"
Anne of Avonlea: Alright here is the truth, I actually didn't mind watching "Anne of Avonlea" all that much. My sister watched the PBS series on VHS about 1,000,000 times. I even remember tearing up when Matthew keeled over and died walking in the cows from the field. Of course I teased my sister about it at the same time. I even had a slight crush on the older Megan Follows in the sort of way you would have a crush on a teacher at school.
Desperate Housewives: I am totally sucked in! I think Eva Langoria and Terri Hatcher are totally overrated, but the show is still fantastic!
Kellie Marin: Corky's sister on "Life Goes On". I thought she was soooo beautiful back in the day. Then I was reintroduced to her in 1998 as Lucy Knight on ER. Her murder was one of the most shocking moments on TV I have ever witnessed. I couldn't sleep for days and I feverishly looked for spoilers on the net to find out if she was really going to die. When she was gasping for air and looking at Carter I freaked out!

So that's my list. At some point I will follow this up with twelve people that I think are just awesome and feel no shame in liking. I hope this isn't the last time you read my blog, and I am sure some of you have lost what little respect you might have had for me, but what can I say...confession is good for the soul! So now it's your turn.

Okay, I'm offended. The Neverending Story is most definitely not an awful movie. It rules! When I was growing up, I wanted my name to be Bastion so bad. How cool a name is that? I can also do a pretty perfect impresssion of Morla the giant turtle.
"Since you've been gone" is a killer song as is "Breakaway". I agree with this choice as well.
Tom Cruise's best performance is in Magnolia. Go watch it immediately.
Michael Jackson - I was personally affronted when I heard people saying, "Don't you love that new Alien Ant Farm song, Smooth Criminal." I would stare at them aghast. It was Michael Jackson, you pre-pubescent twits! And his version is Faaaaaaar superior to that pathetic attempt at a remake. Those were his days. And he was IT.
And show no shame for Megan Follows. I, too, was incredibly smitten with her. Not as good as "Anne of Green Gables", but "Avonlea" was a'ight.

Okay, I'm going to try and stop laughing long enough to leave this comment... I'll just break this into three categories to make it easier on us both: Agree (A), Disagree (D) and Indifferent (I)

Kelly Clarkson: A
Richard Marx: D (you're such a girl!)
Justin Timberlake: D (you're such a girl!)
Breathe: I
Oprah: I
Rush Limbaugh: A (You seem a little too confident about a party change... don't count Giuliani out so quickly...)
Tom Cruise: D www.TomCruiseIsNuts.com
N*Sync: D (you're such a girl!)
Danny White: I
Martina McBride: A
TBN: I (never seen it)
Jacko: A (his talent really has been tragic)
NeverEnding Story: A/D I'm with Jonathan - this film was everything boys our age wanted to be and do. Priceless.
Anne of Avonlea: D (you're such a girl!)
Desperate Housewives: D (never seen a single episode, but haven't seen/heard anything that makes me want to see it)
Kellie Maron: D (She's no Alyssa Milano ala Who's The Boss)

Loved the list. There is no judgement coming from a guy who went to a Verizon store, sang 2 N*SYNC songs (acapella, mind you), won the contest, and got free tickets to their concert. All the 10 - 16 year old girls were soooo jealous. I knew I would win. OK, way too much personal disclosure. Thanks for making me laugh and, at the same time, normalizing that a little bit for me.

Two things. I, too, had a cruch on Kellie Martin when she was on Life Goes On, only it was dubbed into Afrikaans as More Is Nog 'N Dag, which being translated is "Tomorrow is Another Day." Totally hot.

And I actually got to dedicate a song to my wife on the Delilah Radio Show. Sadly, neither my wife nore I got to hear it, but three family members in three different states heard it, and called to see if it was me. Sadly, she chose to play "Once, Twice, Three Times a Lady." Not exactly what I would have picked.

Not sure what a cruch is.
