Misc...

I saw the director of this film Eugene Jarecki on the Daily Show a few weeks ago. He gave a great interview talking about this film (click on image to the left for trailer) and some of the research he did in creating this movie. This looks like something we all need to see, as Americans not as Democrats or Republicans. Mr. Jarecki seems to be coming at this from a sincere point of view. It got pretty good reviews. Has anyone seen it?

Has anybody else noticed the poor outfits for the American athletes during these Olympics? The snowboarders looked like they were in white hazmat suits and lets not even talk about the berets worn during the opening ceremonies.

How can you really have a bad day when you have those two smiling at you in the morning. However Allison and I would like the picture to be taken a little after seven instead of at 6:15 a.m. We were going to put blinds on our bedroom windows since they face due east, but what's the point. We have seen every sunrise since we have been in the new apartment...thanks Levi!

Finally, have you seen this Brokeback: To The Future movie trailer? it's pretty funny. It also goes to show how creative editing, narration, and scoring in a trailer can lead you to believe a movie is something that it really isn't. The Independence Day trailer made me think it was going really be a scary movie (in a War of the Worlds kind of way). It wasn't.

Speaking of Brokeback, I am curious if anyone has actually seen this movie? I know of four people that have, but none of them have chosen to blog about it (only two of them have blogs). I want to see it, but there are a lot of other films ahead of it. And I am not sure which is worse, not seeing it because it might be uncomfortable, or seeing it and not liking it.

Saw Brokeback Mountain. Loved it. One of the best movies of the year.
Why We Fight has some really good buzz around it. Interestingly enough, a lot of people were angry about the film when it screened at the Angelika because they were expecting it to be openly Bush-bashing like a Michael Moore film and, when it wasn't, they were disappointed. What they got instead was a discussion of the inevitable connection of war to capitalism. Which is MUCH more interesting than targeting Bush. Again. Like every other movie about war to come out in the last few years. Scapegoats are much easier targets than universal concepts. Make no mistake, from what I gather from some film geek reviews the film is decidedly against the Iraq war. I'm just glad it's giving a different take on the subject.

I have seen both the movies in question. "Why We Fight" gives a very interesting historical perspective. It isn't out-right Bush-bashing, but if your mind is already inclined that way, it's very easy to find. But I think the good thing about it is that both sides are openly represented and seems to be people who have experienced war talking about war, unlike most anti-war documentaries that are made by people who conscientiously object.

Brokeback Mountain was also great. If you can get over what is uncomfortable about it, it is a worthwhile experience. Heath Ledger is pretty amazing.

I feel like I saw Brokeback after hearing too much hype. It's great but not the Second Coming like it's been made out to be--hate it when that happens, when things get overhyped. I thought it was better than a lot of past Best Pictures but haven't seen enough nominated pics this year to make any predictions. Performances were top to bottom amazing, Anne Hathaway's wigs less so. :)

Regarding American athletes uniforms... or "outfits" as you say... I've watched pretty much every type of event and haven't seen any "outfits" that I found strange. The snowboarding "outfits" are big and loose, but that seems to be the norm for snowboarding; all of the teams' are like that, I'm sure in part because many of the athletes are skateboarders. I'm sure they allow good range of motion and are lightweight. In any case, I'm surprised you'd call out a uniform with Yankees pinstripes.

Regarding Brokeback... As I've said, it's a very good movie. It is often quiet and somewhat slow-paced, which is fitting to its beautiful rural setting. It is also very efficient. It communicates a lot using very little. With a single scene, you can infer what has happened over a period of five to ten years. Regarding the parts that "might be uncomfortable" ... I think you'll be fine. There is one sex scene between two men that is very brief and in which nothing is explicitly shown (in contrast to Munich, a movie I also liked, but which depicts extremely violent acts very graphically...but you probably haven't heard much about that).

I highly recommend seeing Brokeback, but I'm afraid, like Holly, that it has probably been built up too much to appreciate it now. Put it out of your mind for a few years and then go rent it.
