The Grammy's

I love watching the Grammy's. I think it's great that the Dixie Chicks won five Grammy's including the two big ones (record and album of the year). I bet Hillary wishes she had taken a cue from Natalie Maines back in 2003. I was hoping that during one of their acceptance speeches they would have said something like,

"Music should always be a place where views can be freely expressed without fear or intimidation. It should be noted that there is room in both popular and country music for dissenting ideas to be expressed. Thank you."
Of course I guess the point was made by them winning all the awards right? As much as I support the Dixie Chicks right to speak their mind, I still don't have that album, which I will remedy shortly. Looking back on it, doesn't it seem ridiculous that the country music corporate machine turned their back on them. Really, so foolish and short sighted.

My brief rundown:
  1. The police were awesome, and even I was strangely attracted to Sting. I can't imagine what a woman feels like.
  2. Justin Timberlake is totally legit.
  3. John Mayer - He is absolutely the new guitar god.
  4. Shakira - Can someone explain to me why her display of sexuality doesn't seem as trashy as Fergie's, Nelly Furtado, or Brittany Spears?
  5. Mary J. Blige - Best performer of the night, breath taking.
  6. Red Hot Chilli Peppers - COMPLETELY OVERRATED! Quote me on that.
  7. Rascal Flatts - A pathetic and sad imitation of the original. They butchered the Eagles.
  8. Carrie Underwood - 18 months ago she had never been on an airplane. Now she has us all eating our of her hand.
  9. The Justin Timberlake Girl - We'll never hear from any of those girls again. I feel bad for them because the girl who won did a good job. Almost too good of a job, she couldn't have been an amateur.
  10. The Movie Stars - They just looked really uncool compared to the musicians.
That's my wrap up. I got this hilarious link to a run down on the Grammy's posted on the ESPN.com site. It's very funny, check it here.

justin timberlake legit? chili peppers overratted? i know your job requires you to keep the pulse of 13-17 yr old demographic, but please don't encourage their poor taste in music :)

the chili peppers saved rock music from the glam rock of motley crue and continue to save music from the likes of timberlake who depend more on a Mac than any instrument to produce their sound.

the grammys, like the oscars, are merely popularity contests as evidenced by gnarls barkley's nomination for album of the year. The state of music today is in disarray as witnessed by the awesome performance by Smokey Robinson, then followed by progressively worse artists Richie and Chris Brown.

it's ok if your jealous of the fruscinate's guitar playing, i am too :)

I'm with Ewing on your take re Timberlake. Legit? Hardly. I save that word for artists who strive to make a point(s) about our world through their projects. Maybe you mean to say, "Timberlake is a legit pop artists who has a good voice and sings music that the populace will digest in mass quantities."

Surely you wouldn't say that Timberlake is legit like, say, Bono?

I wholeheartedly agree with you about the Red Hot Chili Peppers being over-rated. I, during their Californication tour, paid an exorbitant amount of money to see the Chili Peppers in concert. B-a-d, Bad.

And I do believe you can be a legit musician, without being socially conscious. Bono and J.T. are in no way in the same category musically, but Justin is indeed among the most talented of his pop compatriots.

I use "legit" in that the talent you see displayed by Justin isn't manufactured or created by a corporate machine intended to sell records. It's true that Justin was brought to fame by that machine (N*Sync), but his talent is to the level that he is no longer dependent on that. In fact you could even argue that he is the one who is the trendsetter. He seems to not take himself too seriously (SNL) and is genuianlly trying to stretch the bounds of POP.

Hear me people BONO (U2) is in a completely different stratosphere compared to just about everyone at the Grammy's let alone JT. So let's not read too much into my words. Besides I actually don't even like JT's album, but he is a great performer.

Chris Ewing, if you recall it was Nirvana and Pearl Jam that saved rock music from the glam. You never saw those guys painting themselves silver and wearing socks on the junk.....they didn't need to because the music spoke clearly enough.

Smokey Robinson was the creepiest thing about the Grammys. Isn't he like 80 or something?!

Back off the MAC!
