Brooke Fraser - New Music
"Albertine" - Brooke Fraser
I have a cyclical relationship with Christian music. There are times when I will go months without listening to any, and then times where that's all I want to hear. And I hate to admit it, but my spiritual connection to God often follows the same pattern. Often times my gateway into a deeper and more productive spiritual focus is Christian music. I tend to gravitate more towards artists that articulate a Christian world view in not such explicit or obvious ways (ie every song must mention Jesus or God). Worship music is the exception to this.
Thanks to iTunes $7.99 Editors Pick sale I have discovered an artist named Brooke Fraser. She is blowing me away right now.
Brooke is a twenty four year old award-winning New Zealand singer-songwriter. She started writing songs at age twelve and taught herself the acoustic guitar at fifteen. She has never taken any singing lessons and her voice and stage presence are so natural. She has written songs for Hillsong and has helped lead worship for them.
She has a worship leaders authenticity and a songwriters gift of nuance and subtly. The perfect mix for me when it comes to artists who are interested in exploring Christian themes in music.
Here she is leading worship at the Hillsong Conference last year.
The song I embedded above was written in 2005 when she took a trip to Rwanda. Pretty amazing lyrics to come out of a 21 year old.
Her album is well worth the $7.99 price tag.
